What is Garden Score?
Maybe you've wondered how your shopping habits affect the environment. We're all trying to choose products that are good for the planet and have as little impact as possible, but it can be tricky to know how sustainable they really are. At Nortene, a brand belonging to the Catral Group, we've created the Garden Score—an indicator that helps us measure the environmental, social, and economic impact of our products. This assessment is audited through an official certifying authority.
Every decision counts! With the Garden Score, you can easily discover the impact our Nortene products have on both the planet and people—all with complete transparency. We're joining forces to build a more mindful future, and starting with our gardens!

The Garden Score is determined using a comprehensive methodology that evaluates performance across three key dimensions: Environmental (70%), social (15%) and governance (15%). Thus, the environmental performance value incorporates indicators based on assessment methodologies and requirements outlined in the UNE-EN ISO 14021:2016 standard for self-declared environmental claims (Type II environmental labelling). Framework verified by an independent organisation.’
- Localisation. The environmental aspects included in the Garden Score assessment are determined based on the European market, focusing on elements of greatest significance.
- Timing. The Garden Score is determined by considering the commercial relationships with suppliers at the time of verification. This may result in a single product having two different scores, as older stock and updated versions (with adjusted indicator scores) can coexist.
- Relevance. In cases where a product comes from multiple supply chains, the organization chooses the most representative supplier to assess the indicators.

How do we calculate the final score?
Garden Score is based on strict criteria that evaluate the entire product life cycle, from raw materials to waste management after its useful life has ended. Each criterion is carefully weighted based on its importance for sustainability, and the final score is presented on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 indicating the highest level of sustainability.
It works as a scoring system that evaluates our sustainability performance through 17 key indicators, helping us pinpoint areas for improvement in our processes and involving the entire value chain.

Closing the loop
Our Sustainable Product Strategy
Garden Score was created as part of Closing the Loop, our Sustainable Product Strategy. Through Closing the Loop, we ensure a sustainable and efficient life cycle for our products, while guaranteeing that every stage of their life is as sustainable and functional as possible. We take care of the planet while you enjoy the benefits of our solutions.
We define Closing the Loop as two interconnected circles, representing the 7 stages our products pass through, from their creation to their reuse at the end of their useful life.
This approach ensures that the entire process is both responsible and sustainable. Our goal is to maximize the value of our products, and minimize their environmental impact, by avoiding replacements, and encouraging recycling and reuse. This ensures a complete and efficient cycle, closing the loop effectively and sustainably.
